What To Do If You Have An Accident

I've just had an accident, what do I do?

So you're on your way to work and all of a sudden you hear a bang, look in your mirror and see that another vehicle has had a collision with you. What do you do now?

Firstly you need to stay calm. You are bound to be feeling shaken up but it is important that you stay composed to ensure you obtain everything you need from the scene.

Whenever possible you must be sure to obtain the following;

  • The vehicle registrations for all parties involved
  • The names, addresses and contact numbers for all parties involved
  • The insurance details for all parties involved
It is recommendable to keep a disposable camera in your vehicle with you at all times. It can prove very valuable if liability is being disputed if you have photographs of what has happened. Where appropriate you should look to take pictures of the accident.
We advise you to never admit liability at the scene. You may believe it to be your fault but you cannot be certain; so it is best to leave it to the professionals to decide. In the same respect it is very common for the other party to admit liability at the scene but then tell their insurance company a totally different story. For this reason you should always try to obtain details of any witnesses that saw the accident take place. This can be crucial when discussing liability with the other party.
If the police attended the scene then request the name and number of the officer present.
To finish, the most important thing to do is stay calm and be sure to obtain as many of the details listed above as possible. These very simple things can save a lot of time and effort in the future and can help to ensure you don't end up with a claim against your own insurance.
Safe Driving!
